Statistical Multiplexing of Correlated Variable-length Packet Trains : an Analytic Performance Study
نویسندگان
چکیده
We consider a statistical multiplexer which is modeled as a discrete-time single-server queueing system. Messages consisting of a variable number of fixed-length packets arrive to the multiplexer at the rate of one packet per slot (“train arrivals”), which results in what we call a primary correlation in the packet arrival process. The distribution of the message lengths (in terms of packets) is general. Additionally, the arrival process exhibits a secondary correlation, which results from the fact that the distribution of the number of leading packet arrivals in a slot depends on some environment variable. We assume this environment to have two possible states, each with geometric sojourn times. By using generating functions and an infinite-dimensional state description, we derive closed-form expressions for the mean, the variance and the tail distribution of the buffer contents in the steady state. Some numerical examples illustrate the effect of both primary and secondary correlation on the multiplexer performance.

Queueing of Correlated Packet-trains : an Analytic Performance Study
We study a statistical multiplexer that is modelled as a discrete-time single-server queueing system with infinite capacity. At the input of the multiplexer, there is a possibly unbounded population of users that generate ‘low-speed’ messages. Each such message is composed of a variable number of fixed-length packets which consecutively enter the queue at the speed of one packet per time slot. ...
متن کاملModeling and Analysis of WDM OPS Employing Tunable Converter Sharing under Self-Similar Variable Length Packet Traffic
Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) switching has been emerging as the dominant technology in optical networks. In this paper, we study the switching performance of WDM optical packet switch (OPS) equipped with tunable wavelength converter sharing dedicated to each output fiber line under self-similar variable packet length traffic. In this study, we model WDM OPS employing tunable wavelengt...
متن کاملPerformance Analysis of Buffers with Train Arrivals and Correlated Output Interruptions
In this paper, we study a discrete-time buffer system with a timecorrelated packet arrival process and one unreliable output line. In particular, packets arrive to the buffer in the form of variable-length packet trains at a fixed rate of exactly one packet per slot. The packet trains are assumed to have a geometric length, such that each packet has a fixed probability of being the last of its ...
متن کاملModels for packet switching of variable-bit-rate video sources
Packet switching of variable-bit-rate real-time video sources is a means for efficient sharing of communication resources while maintaining uniform picture quality. Performance analysis for the statistical multiplexing of such video sources is required as a first step towards assessing the feasibility of packet video. This paper extends our earlier work in modeling video sources which have been...
متن کاملUltrafast Photonic Label Switch for Asynchronous Packets of Variable Length
This paper describes new optical switching architectures supporting asynchronous variable-length packets. Output line contention is resolved by optical delay line buffers. By introducing a WDM technology, parallel buffer can be equipped with multiple wavelengths on the optical delay line buffer. Using an ul-trafast photonic label processing technique, an implementation of our architecture would...
